" ... 95% of women are in a state of estrogen dominance," says Ori Hofmekler, author of The Anti-Estrogenic Diet. "This is a significant endocrine condition in which estrogen is no longer in proper balance with progesterone ..." The body wide consequences: fatigue, mood swings, menstrual problems and blood sugar imbalances. "But mainly, estrogen dominance can double - or even triple - the body's fat stores," Hofmekler cautions."

The cause

There is growing evidence that the cause for PMS is hormonal imbalance – more specifically an excess of estrogen over progesterone in the body. This can lead to bad PMS symptoms: heavy bleeding, menstrual cramps, bloating, mood swings, depression, water retention (weight gain), headaches and migraines, and fatigue.

The solution

The solution requires the means to counteract the excess of estrogen, establish a healthy hormonal balance with the right metabolic environment to decrease inflammation, eliminate bloating, lower bleeding and relieve pain. That's where Defense Nutrition's EstroX and PMS Relief E-Guide come into play.

Excerpt from the E-Guide:

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) can be identified as a disorder that currently affects most women during the years of menstruation. PMS occurs about one week to ten days before menstruation. It involves PMS symptoms that range from cramps, weight gain, bloating, sore breasts, backache and headache, to mood swings, fatigue and depression.

Though the above PMS symptoms are common in our society and often regarded as normal, they aren't really natural nor are they necessary. In fact, in certain un-Westernized societies including those of Central American Indians, Chinese and Japanese, women do not experience these unpleasant PMS symptoms during their period. It has also been noted that improvement in the surrounding environment and nutritional intake has beneficial effects on all menstrual disorders.

The purpose of the PMS Relief Kit is to examine the major causes of PMS and offer a viable solution – one that can naturally address the core of the problem, eliminate what causes it and finally alleviate its related symptoms

The Problem

It has been established that most menstrual difficulties occur due to a hormonal imbalance. There are many variables that can adversely affect the body's hormonal integrity including inadequate nutrition, stress and disease. Nonetheless, researchers worldwide are finding more and more evidence that the main cause for hormonal imbalance and its related disorders are chemicals that are abundantly found in the environment, food and water – chemicals that have a similar structure to the female hormone estrogen, and when in excess, can devastate women's and men's bodies. These estrogenic chemicals have shown the capacity to bind to estrogen receptors in the body, causing an unnatural increase in estrogen levels leading to an excess of estrogen over other hormones. This excess of estrogen in the body has shown to cause severe side effects with symptoms including weight gain, allergies, headaches, blood sugar disorders, hypertension, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, and depression as well as increased susceptibility for female disorders, diabetes and cancer.

What's notable here is the fact that the above symptoms are virtually the same as those associated with PMS. It then becomes evidently clear that chronic exposure to estrogenic chemicals which leads to an excess of estrogenic substances in the body is a major cause for PMS symptons. Thus, the solution for PMS requires the decisive means to counteract this excess of estrogen while eliminating its related side effects.

The Solution

To successfully address the problem, we need to examine it first. The menstrual cycle is regulated by the two steroidal sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones play different roles in the body. While estrogen prepares the follicle and the endometrium for pregnancy, progesterone is responsible for sustain&ing the fertilized ovum, the embryo and later on the fetus, throughout gestation. Estrogen and progesterone balance each other's actions, however with quite contradictory effects on the body. While estrogen promotes cellular growth, fat gain, inflammation, low thyroid, mood swings and depression, progesterone does just the opposite. It inhibits cellular growth and tumors, and is an anti-inflammatory and natural diuretic hormone. Progesterone promotes fat utilization for energy, enhances thyroid actions and also provides a feeling of well being. Normally, progesterone levels are higher than estrogen (when in its prime level, during the second week of the menstrual cycle – the luteal phase, progesterone levels are hundreds of times higher than estrogen). Nonetheless, the problem arises when progesterone drops below its normal levels.

When progesterone levels become chronically low, estrogen hormones are allowed to circulate unopposed in the body, causing a condition called estrogen dominance. There are few reasons why progesterone levels drop. Since progesterone is the precursor (the source) for virtually all steroidal hormones including sex hormones, stress hormones and other hormones that regulate blood sugar and blood minerals, it can be rapidly depleted due to chronic stress, inadequate nutrition and disease. Aging is another reason for a low progesterone level. In fact, during menopause, progesterone levels are virtually non-existent. There is also evidence that estrogenic substances can antagonize progesterone receptors in the body. Moreover, both natural and synthetic estrogens can cause an increased conversion of progesterone and testosterone to estrogen, and thereby deplete the progesterone pool in the body.

The main reason, therefore, for the current growing number of women who suffer from an excess of estrogen over progesterone is most likely the ever-growing exposure to estrogenic substances derived from petroleum, plastics or plants. These include pesticides in produce, hormones in meat and dairy, plasticizers in plastic bottled water, plastic packed milk, dental material, pharmaceutical products, adhesives in painting products, surfactants in shampoos, cosmetics and lotions. On the top of this list are also some natural estrogenic compounds called phytoestrogens that can mimic estrogen in the body and thus can accelerate an already existing problem of excess estrogen. Most notable among them are the isoflavones found in soy products including soy milk, tofu and soy protein isolate. The dual combination of synthetic estrogens and natural estrogens (xenoestrogens and phytoestrogens) cause a double whammy effect on the body. These estrogenic substances interrupt the body's hormonal balance causing adverse estrogenic effects which, as noted, can be accelerated by chronic stress and inadequate nutrition.

The real solution to PMS requires the means to:

First,
increase the body's defenses against estrogenic chemicals by increasing the intake of anti-estrogenic foods and herbs while eliminating all estrogen promoting substances from the diet, and

Second,
raise progesterone levels by increasing the intake of foods that promote progesterone.
